Environmental Activities

UMore Park development efforts include environmental investigations and assessments to inform decision-making for projects within the property.

Sand and Gravel Resources Project
The University of Minnesota launched an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process for the proposed Sand and Gravel Resources Project in 2008. This process will examine the impact that the proposed mining project would have on the environment and will include consideration of soil and water quality, traffic, air quality, native plant and animal species, etc. It will also identify any needed environmental remediation for the proposed mining area. Asbestos Abatement
An asbestos abatement process was completed in August 2008. The focus was approximately 176 acres of the former Gopher Ordnance Works (GOW) area. The GOW was a WWII smokeless gunpowder production facility established by the federal government. The assessment covered three production lines that are located in the central area of the GOW. The three lines were never completed and saw no production activity. At the time the GOW facilities were constructed, asbestos was commonly used in building materials. The abatement process included primarily the collection of Transite material from the surface of the ground. VCI Environmental Inc. conducted the abatement work based on a competitive bid process.
