UMore Park East Remedial Investigation

In spring 2012, the University of Minnesota completed a remedial investigation (RI) of the eastern 3,500 acres of its UMore Park property in Dakota County.

The purpose of the RI was to collect important information regarding the environmental condition of the property.  The RI investigated historical uses of the property, including the Gopher Ordnance Works, a federal smokeless gunpowder manufacturing facility during World War II, as well as activities following the University’s acquisition of the property.

The University’s contractor for the RI, Barr Engineering, worked to collect samples of soil and groundwater for laboratory analysis to assess any potential environmental impacts. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) provided regulatory oversight for the RI and is the lead environmental administrative agency for the site.

Milestones

• June 28, 2012: A public forum was held to inform the public about the findings of the 2011 Remedial Investigation of UMore Park East at the Rosemount Community Center by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the University of Minnesota.
   
• May, 2012: Following a 12 month Remedial Investigation completed by Barr Engineering, on the eastern 3,500 acres of the property, the final Remedial Investigation Report is now available. • May 19, 2011: A Public Information and Comment Meeting was held at the Rosemount Community Center by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the University of Minnesota.
   
• May 9, 2011: The Phase I Environmental Site Assessment and the RI Draft Work Plan are completed (documents available in the Information Repository)
   
• November 2010: Through a competitive bid process, the University of Minnesota selects Barr Engineering to conduct the remedial investigation.
   
• August 2010: The University issues a request for proposals for the remedial investigation of 3,500 acres of its property in Dakota County. Read the press release.

The Information Repository is designed to provide a convenient and readily accessible location where residents can go to read and obtain copies of pertinent documents about the site. The Repository presently contains copies of many past environmental studies at UMore Park, documents relating to the planned RI at UMore Park, and other materials regarding the University's property.The Repository will be updated regularly to include additional information as it becomes available.
