UMore Park: University of Minnesota Outreach, Research and Education Park

UMore Park Academic Initiatives

The University's commitment to integrating academic mission into planning and development at UMore Park is supported by the UMore Park Academic Mission Advisory Board to create new academic opportunities for faculty, students and staff that enhance research, learning and outreach with the overarching goal to ensure that new knowledge and innovation from academic efforts benefit planning, development, community engagement and economic vitality in the region. Academic initiatives complement the work of the for-profit UMore Development Limited Liability Company (LLC), which was established by the Board of Regents in October 2009, to manage the real estate and business development enterprises.

Formed in the fall of 2008, the Academic Mission Advisory Board supports the integration of the University's academic mission into planning and development efforts.

  • Fostering opportunities for place-based, interdisciplinary research. The goal of the Academic Mission Advisory Board's Interdisciplinary Curriculum Development Committee was to develop a framework for ongoing interdisciplinary courses based on long-term development at UMore Park. The 2012 report addresses (1) ongoing opportunities for students, faculty and staff members across all units of the University to contribute to the planning and development of the property, (2) real-time, real-world experience that offers engaged research, learning and outreach in partnership with the local communities and broader communities of interest, (3) innovation and sustainability-driven models that can enrich the future development and surrounding region and be replicated elsewhere, and (4) highest quality scholarship and distinction for students, faculty and staff that also contribute to the reputation and prestige of the University.

  • Community of Scholars Ad Hoc Committee. A key recommendation of the November 2009 report, Integrating Academic Mission into Planning and Development of the UMore Park Property, was the creation of a community of scholars program to promote learning and discovery through the generation of cutting-edge research and curricula across a broad set of issues related to UMore Park planning and development. An ad hoc committee of the Academic Mission Advisory Board explored this opportunity and produced a program proposal.

  • Integrating Academic Mission report. In November 2009, three committees of the Academic Mission Advisory Board produced a report addressing three critical areas for academic mission integration into planning and development at UMore Park—faculty incentives and rewards, student opportunities and guiding principles for the board.
